Company Origins & Purpose

This section helps us explain why MentorCity exists and the problem it was built to solve.

Why was MentorCity created in the first place?

When working in the non-profit sector, MentorCity’s founder started a mentoring program in which mentees met with a mentor for 10 minutes, then moved to the next mentor. Within the hour, they had met with 6 mentors, which helped them to expand their network and receive valuable guidance and support. Seeing these interactions and the light bulbs go off, and the excitement in the room, inspired our founder about the impact that mentoring conversations have, and he was looking for a way to maintain and build upon these conversations when he came up with the idea for MentorCity. 

What gap or challenge did you see in how organisations were running mentoring programmes before MentorCity existed?

We saw that it took months for mentees and mentors to be matched when using an Excel spreadsheet. And then, once they were matched, there was no way to track how the relationship was progressing. 

What wasn’t working with traditional or manual mentoring approaches that software needed to fix?

Software needed a quicker and more efficient way to make matches. 

How has MentorCity evolved since it launched?

We are like eHarmony for mentoring. 

We provide a software platform that matches mentees with mentors for meaningful mentoring relationships. 

What does MentorCity actually enable organisations to do that they couldn’t do easily before?

It is difficult for an organization to match mentees to mentors.

Once the match is made, it’s difficult for the organization to track whether the mentoring partners are meeting and to analyze other metrics on the participants and their relationships.

With MentorCity, you can track and report on how a person has evolved as a result of the mentoring relationships they were involved in.  

What does a successful mentoring programme look like when MentorCity is in place?

Participants have a mentoring relationship and regularly schedule meetings through the platform. They have completed the mentoring agreement and set goals that they are working towards.

We allow customers to design the program based on their vision. 

Customers can decide whether participants have one-off conversations, set the duration for the mentoring relationship, or allow participants to set the duration based on their needs. 

Configuring the platform is easy, and they can turn switches on or off depending on the program’s design. 

They can also configure the dashboards by adding or removing widgets, creating custom widgets, and adapting the mentoring process steps based on their program’s design.   

How do you view your relationship with customers: software vendor or long-term programme partner?

We are a long-term program partner.

How do you ensure MentorCity performs reliably across large or complex programmes?

MentorCity works with customers who have small mentoring programs of up to 50 people, and we scale to large programs with tens of thousands of participants. 

What safeguards are in place to support programme consistency and data integrity?

We ensure that data is protected by encrypting it in transit and at rest. We also conduct annual vulnerability and penetration tests by a third party. Data is backed up on a daily basis. 

How do you support organisations running sensitive or high-impact mentoring initiatives?

We ensure that the safeguards are in place to protect participants. For example, in some youth programs, we anonymize names and block inappropriate content from the platform, such as bullying, swear words, and pictures that could be shared.

Our current pricing model allows organizations to get started with a mentoring program at a low monthly licensing fee and grow the number of participants as they begin to see success.

When introducing a mentoring program, organizations typically start with a small pilot and then expand it across the organization. 

What would you say to someone concerned about long-term commitment or platform adoption risk?

We provide monthly contracts.
